  4. Interesting map and stats. She doesn’t mention any alternative sources of news and they are hard to come by in the US. PBS does a fair job with their news magazine, “All Things Considered” and our local station in Michigan had the BBC world news program which was not US-centric. For more in-depth on the subject consider Noam Chomsky and Edward Herman’s book, “Manufacturing Consent” wherein they analyze US media by using the Propaganda Model. 5. One last thought and then I will quit. Miller accurately points out that mindless fluff/celebrity stories(Britney Spears et al)are cheaper to cover than news concerning the rest of the world. What she does not touch upon is their value as a form of ‘Soma”, a soporific for the conscience and a distraction for the “masses”. After all, if you are going to strafe the national consciousness with the “war is peace” crap from the White House press secretary and ignore most of the world, you have to provide something to fill the rest of your time or pages. It may as well be harmless pap that people will buy, eh?

Maybe it was a grandma or great aunt who lived through the Depression and learned to save anything that was usable, maybe it was just someone who was thrifty and knew how to pinch pennies. What ever the reason behind it, saving wrapping paper makes good green sense.
