More Info on Lisha Lynn Mineral Cosmetics

Posted on October 29, 2008 by Allie

Some readers had questions about Lisha Lynn Mineral Cosmetics, so I went straight to the source to get answers.  Alicia Redden, owner of Lisha Lynn, was kind enough to take the time to fill us in on her makeup.

JessTrev wanted to know if Lisha Lynn products contained nanoparticles.

Alicia said, “Yes, I’m fully aware of the micronized/nanoparticle issue.  I do not use “micronized” titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, the oxides I use are well above the 100 nanometer size, making them perfectly safe.

My main ingredients are mica, iron oxides, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, silk powder, allantoin, magnesium myristate, boron nitride, and sericite mica some of the eyeshadows have natural carnauba wax in them to give them softer feel and better staying power, but it is a coating on the mica only, not actually wax poured into the makeup. I also have talc listed on some of the labels, but it is not used any longer, I used in previously in experimenting to get a more translucent color and more natural looking foundation, but have found a way other than talc!

Formulating is interesting……..it’s easy to say you only want 4 ingredients but you don’t want to look like a ghost or like you are wearing a mask, so there is an art to it.

I have used silica in the past, but stopped after learning it was potentially dangerous for the lungs.  Silica is in lots of skincare products and makeup and is perfectly safe in a “moist” product, there is no chance of inhalation, but in a powder product there is a chance of inhalation.  Although you’d have to inhale more than is used for application every day for 50 years for it to build up, there is the possibility that it could be a problem, so I’ve chosen to take it out, although many mineral makeups continue to use it. I try to be as safe and purposeful in my ingredients as I can be and still have a high quality, well-performing makeup.”

I entered the ingredients from Lisha Lynn’s Mineral Foundation into EWG’s Skin Deep Database to get a provisional report.  The foundation scored a 1 (0 being the best, 10 being the worse), and contains no “high hazard” ingredients.  You can read the full report here.

  9. Thanks for posting on Lisha again. It’s amazing to read a blog where you can hear from an actual owner of a cosmetic company about the ingredients! I’m so impressed and fortunately, I’m in desperate need of new makeup. My sensitive skin is not taking all these Northeast weather transitions well!
Allie, if you (or any of your readers) try anything else by Lisha, I’d love to know what you think!

  15. Yay for transparency (heh heh). Thanks so much to you both for answering my questions. Now, if I could just somehow get this level of service at a store where I can try stuff on (Sephora folks were like, ah, Skin Deep database? Not so much).

  16. Hey ladies. Thanks for all the comments. Good luck on the giveaway. I wanted to mention something else…YES, the makeup does contain sunscreen. Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide are both sunscreens. They provide both UVA and UVB protection. You will see them listed on many lotion sunscreen products.
If you plan to be in the sun for an extended amount of time, you should layer your minerals over an SPF containing moisturizer to ensure good protection. The makeup will give better coverage over any moisturizer, but SPF is always preferable.

Tip of the Day

If It Doesn’t Smell, Don’t Wash It

19980_m.jpg

According to Real Simple, if every American made an effort to launder less — cutting out just one load of laundry a week per household — we’d save enough water to fill seven million swimming pools each year.

So if it looks clean, and it smells clean, call it clean and wear it again. Consider hanging worn clothes out on your clothesline to freshen them up between wearings.
