It doesn’t matter if your goal is a vegetarian meal or a money saving one, TVP tacos are good cheap, vegetarian eats. Even though Textured Vegetable Protein really needs a better name, it’s a great kitchen staple. Read more…

  3. Meat-Free Mondays - Curry Spiced Lentils and Spinach

Posted on December 8, 2008 by Allie

I love lentils.  They’re inexpensive and so versatile.

I’m excited to try this recipe for Curry Spiced Lentils and Spinach from FatFreeVegan.com.  Unfortunately, it needs to cook for 6 hours and since it’s already 2pm, I think we’ll be having a Meat-Free Tuesday instead.

In searching for a vegan recipe for dinner tonight, I came across an odd resource for vegan recipes - The Beastie Boys Message Board.  ‘Cause you can’t, you won’t, and you don’t stop eating textured vegetable protein?

  4. Meat-Free Mondays - Gluten-Free Eggplant Parmesan with Tofu

Posted on October 13, 2008 by Allie

This week’s Meat-Free Mondays recipe is over at Dianne’s Dishes.  I’m guest blogging, and came up with a recipe I’m really excited about.  Check it out here! I think you’ll enjoy it even if you’re a wheat-eater.

And if you’re just coming over from Dianne’s website, welcome!  I hope you’ll consider adding me to your reader or RSS feed.  And please leave a comment (and a link if you have one) to say hi!  I’d love to “meet” you!

  5. Meat-Free Mondays - Eggless Salad

Posted on September 29, 2008 by Allie

Only bloggers will understand the odd urge to photograph your lunch before you eat it so you can share with your readers.  Last night, I had a half-brick of tofu left over from dinner, and decided to whip up some eggless salad.  As I was sitting down to eat it just now, I thought, “Oh!  I should write about this,” so I snapped a picture (the light is terrible today, so please excuse the cruddy picture) and here I am writing about my lunch, while it sits on the kitchen table waiting for me.

Dianne from Dianne’s Dishes, was kind enough to send me a recipe for today’s post.  When I make cucumber salad, it’s cucumbers, lemon juice, and some cracked pepper if I’m feeling fancy.  When Dianne makes cucumber salad, it’s a five star meal.  She’s amazing.  Check it out! Read more…

Since I was hosting Carnival of the Green here yesterday, I didn’t post the usual Meat-Free Mondays post.  Last week, two of my favorite bloggers posted meat-free recipes, and I wanted to mention them here.  So I’m a day late, but you’re getting two for the price of one.  And since the price is free, it’s an awesome deal for you.  :)

Tip of the Day

Bring Your Own Utensils

I carry a titanium backpacking spork around in my purse.  I know that sounds kind of weird, but it saves me from using disposable utensils when I eat out, and it’s so light, I never even notice that I’m carrying it.

Before the Industrail Revolution it was common for guests to be expected to bring their own utensils with them when invited to dine, because utensils were expensive, labor intensive items, and most people didn’t own extra sets.  Now, when it’s possible to buy a set of 1,000 plastic utensils for under $20, people don’t even think about bringing their own.

But think of the plastic waste that can be saved by slipping a fork from home in your purse on the way out the door.  You don’t need anything fancy.  Grab one from your kitchen drawer, or if you’re worried about loosing a piece of a set, pick up a few spare utensils the next time you hit a discount store, thrift shop, or yard sale.  It’s simple a simple way to cut down waste, and it’s always nicer to eat with real utensils anyway.
