What’s in the CSA Bag - Week 1

This is our second year with our CSA.  I’m in love with getting a mystery bag of freshly picked, organic veggies every week.

Chile Chews has been taking pictures of her weekly CSA haul, and I’ve seen a few other bloggers do the same.  I’m always fascinated by what’s growing in other parts of the country and what people plan to do with the food they get.  So I figured I’d follow suit and fill you in on our CSA bag and my plans for it.

Since I live way the frack up here (that is my technical location, if you’re looking on a map) we have a short growing season.  While other CSA’s around the country seem to have started earlier and with gusto, we’re just starting and with lettuce.  We will go through until just after Thankgiving, if all goes well.

We used to get a weekly newsletter with recipes and a list of what’s in the bag.  We didn’t get one this week, so these are my best guesses.  I hope they were just slow to the uptake and next week’s bag will have a newsletter.

This week’s bag included:

  • Lettuce — I’m not sure on exact varieties, but I did see some Boston lettuce in there.  My CSA’s website says they’ve planted Romaine, Boston, Oakleaf, Red and Green Leaf.   The lettuce and mustard greens we’re growing have also taken off in full force, so we’ve got lots. We’ll have salad, salad, and probably some more salad, as well as adding it to sandwiches and the burritos we had for dinner last night.   I’m also thinking about making spring rolls to take with me (substituting Boston lettuce for cabbage) to writing group this week, since I have everything I need on hand, if I can stop playing Word Twist have time.
  • Snow Peas — Not my favorite for some reason.  They make me gag.  Hopefully the husband and dog will snack on these.
  • Snap Peas — Love these, and the bunnies got to the ones I was growing in the yard.  We’ll just snack on these.
  • Spinach — I made this a few weeks ago, and plan to do it again this week.  And I think we’ll make this spinach omlette for breakfast on Saturday, subsitituting fresh spinach for frozen.

That’s this week’s haul.

What’s in your bag?  What have you picked up at the Farmer’s Market?  What have you picked from your garden?  I’d love to hear about it below, and if you do a post about it, be sure to leave a link!

  1. It’s fascinating to watch the difference in growing seasons across the country. What you’re getting now is what we were getting several months ago.

Our pick-up today will have melons, corn, red potatoes, onion, cucumbers, eggplant, and tomatoes. Dang, it’s making me drool already!

  2. wow! pretty green stuff.

our CSA share this week will have lettuce, raddichio, cucumbers (the first!), kale, mini onions, cabbage, summer squash, and some herb. I’ll try to remember posting a pic of our bounty too. and maybe some recipes for the more unique veggies we get. Last week we got kohlrabi and I sauted it with a bit of olive oil, garlic scapes, and green onions. Cook it for a while until tender. It is like a tofu or an eggplant in that it soaks up the flavor of whatever you cook it in.

  3. Love it! I didn’t do the CSA this year (although now that I’ve finally got my own fridge and pantry I’m kinda regretting it). The local farmer’s market has had lettuce, okra and some lovely looking tomatoes lately. It’s also nearly corn season down here and that’s a very good thing.

  4. This week we had a great haul: blue berries, raspberries, cucumbers, yellow and green squash, 3 heads of varying lettuce, beets, salad turnips, dill, and carrots. Oooooo…and more kohlrabi. We eat it raw. My 4 year old left the CSA pick up saying, “This is great. It is going to take me all night to think of how to eat all this.” Yes…I know he is not normal but I love him.

  5. I want to live where Chile is - our CSA is starting a little slow also. I will definitely take a pic Saturday of what we pick up. I have been adding what I can do our morning green smoothies - cause Lord knows I can’t cook!

  6. Would it be rude to ask how much you pay/week for your CSA share? (Just some comparative analysis, of course.)

  7. Hi csim33 — not rude at all!
At 320/per season for roughly 20 weeks (does vary depending on growing conditions) it works out to 16 dollars a week. As the season progresses we get way more food than we do in the first couple of weeks.

Organic Needle — your son is hysterical!

Recycle Old Electronics and Make Some Green

moto-cell-phone.jpg

My husband upgraded his phone and gave me his old one, so even though technically there was nothing wrong with my old phone (except that it couldn’t send e-mail) I now have a new (to me) phone.  And even though my new phone was a hand-me-down, I’m carrying a little eco-guilt about upgrading when I didn’t absolutely need to (although, did I mention that I can now approve website comments where ever I go?).

So what do I do with the old phone?  Wisebread has a good answer!
