What’s in the CSA Bag - Week 6
Posted on August 6, 2008 by

Nothing too exciting going on in the newsletter this week. In non-CSA news, I got really annoyed today because the peaches I bought at the farm market on Saturday have already gone bad (and have taken some other fruit down with them), but I guess this is one of the trials and tribulations associated with buying non-sprayed, non-GMO food. I’d rather deal with rotten peaches than the alternative, I suppose.
Here’s what was in the bag this week:
- Zucchini - I figured out that what I don’t like about zucchini is mostly the center seed part and the texture of it when I slice the zucchini into small “coins” and stir fry it, but chopping it up small along with onions, peppers, sunburst and yellow squash, and cooking over high heat in my cast iron pan is a different story. We’ve eaten a lot of zucchini this way this week, using fresh herbs from the garden and a few splashes of gluten-free beer to liven things up.
- Yellow squash
- Sunburst Squash
- Cubanelle Peppers - These made it into the mix of veggies too. I’m also growing hungarian peppers which are look and taste similar.
- Green Beans - snacking, side dishes
- Magenta Summer Crisp Lettuce - We seem to be getting more manageable amounts of lettuce now, but we’re used to eating so much of it, so it doesn’t seem like enough. It’s only Wednesday and we’re already out of lettuce! Oh no!
- Green Leaf Lettuce
- Golden Beets - Two of the beets we got this week were enormous! One was bigger than my fist.
- Sweet Onions - I love fresh onions so much. I’m glad we get 2-3 a week now. I hope it keeps up.

This week’s newsletter recipe was for stuffed zucchini, but it’s not a gluten-free recipe and I don’t intend to make it. I do, however, intend to make zucchini chips in my dehydrator — possibly tomorrow. I was complaining about all the zucchini, and my friend Marty suggested making chips for snacking. He said to soak the thin slices of zucchini in a bath of icy salt water before drying. I think I’ll give it a try. Dianne did this with root veggies a while ago but used the oven instead of a dehydrator.
Thank you, Marty!

THAT is a good looking CSA basket! What are you going to do with the beets? Our Hutterite farmer’s market has beets and I have tried a couple of recipes and I still aint crazy about beets. To bad about the peaches, guess you gotta gobble ‘em up, ennit?
try slicing the zucchini in long strips, drizzle with olive oil, then fresh parm cheese and grill’em. I have had people who don’t like zucchini ask for the recipe because they thought the zucchini was so delicious.
It looks like you got a nice mix of things! I’ve been thinking about making some zucchini oven “fries” lately. I haven’t quite figured out what I want to do yet, but my mind is working!
