Looking for something to do this weekend? The 11th Hour is opening in theatres across the country today.

Produced and narrated by Leonardo DiCaprio, The 11th Hour takes a look at the current environmental crisis and shows how we can turn things around.

According to the trailer, using existing technology, it is possible for us to decrease the human footprint on earth by 90%.

Check out the trailer here. Stick with the trailer and watch the whole thing. I love the way they talk about this crisis as an opportunity for us all to step up and make a difference.

Go see it, get inspired, and go green!

  7. The Dangers of Nanoparticles in Sunscreen

There’s been a lot of press about sunscreen and safety lately. Is it effective enough? Are the SPF claims accurate? Are they really as waterproof as they claim to be?

Another of the major concerns with sunscreens today is the use of manufactured nanoparticles.

Do you remember using sunscreen when you were a kid? It was gloppier and left a chalky film on your skin. Today, nanoparticles are used in sunscreens to make them go on clear, but nanoparticles do nothing to improve skin protection.

As of now, there hasn’t been enough safety testing of nanoparticles to be sure that they’re safe to use in cosmetic and personal care applications. The concern is that because they’re so small, when absorbed through the skin, nanoparticles can enter our blood stream, cells and vital organs. According to Friends of the Earth, some scientific studies have shown that nanoparticles in sunscreen can disrupt DNA, damage cells and even cause cell death. Read more…

  8. Tip of the Day - Scrap Paper

We’ve talked about using a grocery list when you shop.  You don’t need a fancy lined piece of paper that has “Groceries” printed across the top.  Use the back of an envelope, or the blank side of a junk mail letter.  Give your junk mail new life as scrap paper.

  10. Dagoba Organic Chocolate xocolatl

Dagoba is my kind of company. Right on the wrapper on my xocolatl bar it says, “Chocolate is sacred.”

Yup, their priorities jive with mine.

I also love that they practice what they call “Full Circle Sustainability,” honoring quality, ecology, equity, and community as the foundation of their company. The cacao in their products is organic and sustainably grown, and fairly traded with cooperative farms.  They also work to fund reforestation and ecology research projects in Costa Rica.

And, wow, do they make good chocolate!

xocolatl is their interpretation of the drink made for Aztec gods. It’s 74% cacao dark chocolate with chilies and cacao nibs. Yes, you read that right. Chilies.

The chocolate is rich and full-bodied with the slightest zing of spicy heat. The cacao nibs add a satisfying crunch. It’s perfect for savoring. A tiny piece will satisfy even the worst chocolate craving. It is sacred.

And I just found out that they make xocolatl hot chocolate too. I can’t wait for the weather to get a little chilly!

Tip of the Day

Reuse Gift Wrap

Did you have a family member who sat in the corner at a party or holiday event, carefully folding up wrapping paper for future use? Maybe it was a grandma or great aunt who lived through the Depression and learned to save anything that was usable, maybe it was just someone who was thrifty and knew how to pinch pennies. What ever the reason behind it, saving wrapping paper makes good green sense.
