When I was younger I was obsessed with books about “olden times.” I loved reading all of the Little House books, Little Women, and Anne of Green Gables, and I was fascinated with all of the historical details. One of those details was that back in “olden times” people used bed warmers or wrapped a brick that had been warming by the fire in a piece of flannel and took it to bed with them to keep their feet warm. When I climb between cold sheets, I always wonder why that’s a tradition that didn’t last. (more…)

This morning we talked about cast iron pans. Cast iron pans just so happen to be the perfect cookware for making fajitas. And meat-free fajitas just so happen to be easier and tastier than you’d ever think they could be. (more…)
And the winners are . . . (more…)
I bought a set of three cast iron pans for ten dollars at a discount store in 2000, because I couldn’t afford a decent set of non-stick pans. After all the talk about Teflon killing birds, and non-stick coatings chipping off into food, I’ve realized that being cheap wasn’t the only benefit of my cast iron pans. When chemical coatings leach into food, it’s scary, when cast iron leaches, you get some of the iron your body needs to make red blood cells. (more…)

According to Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style, 25 million pounds of pesticides are used on tobacco plants every year. And that’s not the only environmental issue with smoking:
“The smoke from cigarettes is ten times more polluting than exhaust from diesel fuel. Worldwide, smoking emits more than 5.5 billion pounds of CO2 and more than 11 billion pounds of methane annually. Considering that methane is twenty-three times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, that’s the equivalent of about 235 pounds of CO2 per smoker per year. Then there’s all the packaging, and the fact that so many smokers use the sidewalk as an ashtray.”
So if you’re a smoker, and health reasons alone aren’t enough to get you quit, maybe the carbon cost will. If you’ve been known to bum a cigarette off a friend while you’re at a party, don’t.
