While we were away, my friend Michele took our CSA bags for us, and her enthusiasm for the veggies and trying new things was inspiring. After hearing about her roasted red pepper pizzas and bok choy stir fries, I resolved to get back in gear and make the most of my CSA bags and goods from my garden. Read more…

Only bloggers will understand the odd urge to photograph your lunch before you eat it so you can share with your readers. Last night, I had a half-brick of tofu left over from dinner, and decided to whip up some eggless salad. As I was sitting down to eat it just now, I thought, “Oh! I should write about this,” so I snapped a picture (the light is terrible today, so please excuse the cruddy picture) and here I am writing about my lunch, while it sits on the kitchen table waiting for me.

I’m busy installing insulated curtains and making other adjustments to my home to prepare for winter, because conserving energy is the right thing to do, and also because I know this year’s heating bill will be higher than last it was last year.

Since I’m busy getting ready for my format change, please check out the following article, which I originally posted on BlogHer.
I’m a label reader. I am that person in the grocery store or pharmacy who stands there in the aisle, dazed look on her face, as she studies the tiny writing on the backs of jars and boxes. I’m the person who peels back the little sticker at the bottom of a tub of concealer or on the side of a lipstick to see the listed ingredients. At least 75% of the time, the item I’m studying ends up back on the shelf.
We assume that if it’s on the shelf in the grocery store it’s safe, but there are few specific safety standards for personal care products. The FDA is involved in products that fall into the “drug” category of personal care, like toothpaste or sunscreen. When you see a listing for “active ingredient,” that usually means the product is classified as a drug, and is then subject to FDA scrutiny. But the FDA has no authority over products intended for cosmetic use. Personal care product manufacturers are responsible for their own safety testing, which is a little like asking the fox to mind the hen house. Read more…

The part of camping I’ve always hated is digging into the cooler full of half-melted ice to pull up food that’s probably not adequately chilled to try to make a home cooked meal when you don’t even have a kitchen. I don’t mind backpacking food. It’s all dehydrated so you don’t have the bobbing for food situation, and you’re so hungry by the time you make dinner on a backpacking trip that a cardboard box would taste like the best meal ever. But camping and day hikes don’t produce the same kind of voracious hunger, so on this trip we decided we were eating out. Read more…
