Sign Burt’s Bill

It’s such a pain to read labels on personal care products to make sure there aren’t icky ingredients like parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, and pthyalates (which are often just referred to as “Fragrance” on labels).  Wouldn’t it be nice if there were a natural products standard and seal so one glance at the label could tell you if a product lived up to your standards?

Sign Burt’s Bill over at the Burt’s Bees website to show your support for a system would set the standard for which products can be labeled natural.  Products that meet the standards would be allowed to display a seal indicating that they are free of ingredients you don’t want to rub all over your skin.

From the website:

Did you know that there are personal care products labeled “natural” that contain…

  • NO natural ingredients?
  • Chemicals like parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, petro chemicals, and pthalates that have suspected human health risks?

The reason why is that there is surprisingly NO regulation for what may be called a “natural” personal care product.

At Burt’s Bees, we believe this simply isn’t right. In a world where we’re all trying to maximize our well-being, consumers should feel fully confident in the products they buy, especially those purported to be natural and good for you.

So as the leaders in natural personal care we are doing our part to help. We are working with the Natural Products Association and several competitors to ensure there is only one meaning for what is called “natural.” However, to make this happen, we need one more thing – YOU! We need to show the industry, other competitors, and retailers that this is to help you – the consumer!

So we have developed Burt’s Bill for Setting The Natural Standard. This “bill” is a drive to develop a standard for all natural personal care products. This would require that all natural personal care products:

  1. Meet the highest levels of being natural and safe
  2. Use a seal on all packaging to help consumers easily identify truly natural products

Add your name to the list and let it be known that you’re fed up with pseudo-natural products and you’re not going to take it anymore.

Recycle Old Electronics and Make Some Green

moto-cell-phone.jpg

My husband upgraded his phone and gave me his old one, so even though technically there was nothing wrong with my old phone (except that it couldn’t send e-mail) I now have a new (to me) phone.  And even though my new phone was a hand-me-down, I’m carrying a little eco-guilt about upgrading when I didn’t absolutely need to (although, did I mention that I can now approve website comments where ever I go?).

So what do I do with the old phone?  Wisebread has a good answer!
