Don’t forget to collect cans for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive coming up on May 10th.

To help raise awareness for the drive, Jorge at M80 was kind enough to send me three prize packs to give away. Each prize pack consists of a Stamp Out Hunger 2008 Calendar and a signed Harlem Globetrotters pennant.

To enter, sign in with a valid e-mail address and leave a comment on this post. The giveaway will close on Sunday, May 11th, at noon (Eastern), and I’ll draw a name out of a hat to determine the winner. The winner will be announced on Monday, May 12th. Comments that appear to be spam will not be counted. Good luck!

  5. Hey, I would like to enter the contest and win me me a nifty package! As one who has collected a lot of food at churches and colleges over the years may I suggest think protein. Beans, peanut butter, powdered milk. And meal in a can is always very good, chili, ravioli, stuff like that.

  8. Try getting your children involved in picking out the items with you. Its a great way to help them understand that there are more important things than the latest video game. They will also think twice about leaving vegetables on their plate when they know that some children don’t have anything to eat that night.

  10. Michele — I love the idea of getting your kids involved!

    Beej — You rock!

I almost didn’t get to give stuff yesterday. The mail came, and the bag was still sitting there. I was about to bring it outside, when I saw the mail lady coming back with her truck to get it. Makes sense. She didn’t want to carry the bags on foot. I’m glad I saw her before I took the bag back in.

Tip of the Day

Bring Your Own Utensils

I carry a titanium backpacking spork around in my purse.  I know that sounds kind of weird, but it saves me from using disposable utensils when I eat out, and it’s so light, I never even notice that I’m carrying it.

Before the Industrail Revolution it was common for guests to be expected to bring their own utensils with them when invited to dine, because utensils were expensive, labor intensive items, and most people didn’t own extra sets.  Now, when it’s possible to buy a set of 1,000 plastic utensils for under $20, people don’t even think about bringing their own.

But think of the plastic waste that can be saved by slipping a fork from home in your purse on the way out the door.  You don’t need anything fancy.  Grab one from your kitchen drawer, or if you’re worried about loosing a piece of a set, pick up a few spare utensils the next time you hit a discount store, thrift shop, or yard sale.  It’s simple a simple way to cut down waste, and it’s always nicer to eat with real utensils anyway.
