What Does Your Line Look Like?

Howling Hill tagged me to put up a picture of my clothesline last week when she did a guest post on Project Laundry List’s blog.
Our clothesline set up came with the house. It’s a metal pole in the ground attached to a strip of hooks on the house. We use the rope we use to hang our packs up when we go backpacking as the line. The houses were built in the early 60’s and I’m guessed back in their hayday every house had one, but for the most part, it seems like my nextdoor neighbor and I are the only ones who use ours.

In the background, you can see our very first Christmas tree. We (really me) named him Samwise (totally the best Hobbit) and he just keeps growing.
I do have to admit that I won’t dry towels outside — can’t stand how scratchy they get. And I usually tumble our clothes in the dryer for a few minutes to soften them up after drying outside. And, if it’s been raining for days on end, I use the dryer, because as Organic Needle mentioned the other day, mildew is the enemy.
But when conditions are right, I’m all for drying outside. There’s something calming about hanging the clothes and watching them wave in the breeze. I’m always amazed by how quickly they dry. And I love the little bit of privacy the hanging clothes give us. Like a functional, multicolored fence.
So what does your line look like?

I like to dry my clothes outside, but really hate how stiff they become. Tumbling in the dryer for a few minutes is a good idea.
P.S. I really like that yellow and blue towel. Is it a towel? Well, I like it.
Thanks! It’s a table cloth. One of my friends gave it to us as a wedding present. I love it too. I wish it came in towels! That would be great!
Mine is TBA. But I just wanted to stop over and say that I would like to buy you a non-brown piece of clothing for your next birthday!
Hahahahahaha! It’s funny ’cause it’s true.
I blogged about my clothesline. Please go check it out. I LOVE drying my clothes on the line.

I don’t have a clothes line, as of yet. I hang bras and pants over doors around the house, because putting those in the dryer just ruins them. I used to hang stuff outside on our patio (we live in a small condo) but someone complained to the home owners association. I guess people at the pool behind our condo don’t like looking at my laundry. Sigh. Someday I will own a home with a yard and I will have a clothes line. Cross your fingers that someday will be soon.
Oh yeah, and you’re right about Samwise.
I really want a clothesline, but the husband doesn’t. We have a big double lot in the city, perfect for one…I need tips on convincing him before the weather gets even more perfect.
I totally shouldn’t be typing because my wrists are still killing me (and I shouldn’t even be on my computer!) but I want to say thanks to writing this post.
If those who have put a picture of their lines up can email a link to Project Laundry List, I know Kate would be over the moon. Thanks everyone!
I realized when looking at my clothes on the line a couple weeks ago most of them are blue or gray. I tend to avoid black because it’s so, well, black. I wonder why it is we gravitate to the same color over and over?
Jessica and Rachel: There are great tips on how to change minds about laundry lines on Project Laundry List’s blog so please spend a few minutes over there poking around.
I have that table cloth!
Howling Hill,
Its one thing to change the mind of a single person. Its another to change the mind of an HOA and the anonymous neighbors who complain to it. I’m moving soon, I’ll have a clothes line then.
[...] That’s why not. I was wearing a dress (and yes, it was brown). A bug flew up my dress and bit me on the rear end. So I spent the weekend walking around [...]
[...] See, not all of my clothes are brown. [...]
