Not only is organic produce better for you and less taxing on the environment, new studies show that the use of organic fertilizer could actually be helping the environment.

Via ENN:

“Applying organic fertilizers, such as those resulting from composting, to agricultural land could increase the amount of carbon stored in these soils and contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, according to new research published in a special issue of Waste Management & Research.”

The article goes on to say that if 20% of the farm land in the European Union utilized organic fertilizers, it would be a solution for 8.6% of the EU’s emission reduction goals.

Not only do organic farming practices do less harm, they could amount to a lot of good.

  2. I hate that! I’ve complained to my local grocery store so many times about it. They plastic wrap the organic stuff to Styrofoam trays. I can’t wait until summer to start getting my farm share produce again.

Maybe it was a grandma or great aunt who lived through the Depression and learned to save anything that was usable, maybe it was just someone who was thrifty and knew how to pinch pennies. What ever the reason behind it, saving wrapping paper makes good green sense.
