Bring Back the Victory Garden

During World War II, the US Government encouraged everyone to grow fruits, vegetables and herbs, as a way to supplement rationed food and make supplies for the troops go further. Branded as “Victory Gardens, ” the movement produced 9 to 10 million tons of food in yards, community plots, and rooftop gardens, and gave everyone an opportunity to participate in the war effort.
Let’s bring back the Victory Garden. Plant fruit trees, herbs and veggies in your back yard, or even your front yard.
Think it’s too late in the season to start a veggie garden? Think again. Some veggies do better in cooler weather. I’m planning to plant another round of snap peas as soon as this heat wave breaks. They’ll be a great snack in September.
Not ready to tear up your yard for a garden? Try containers.
Reducing your food miles, feeding your family home-grown fruits and veggies, and doing your part for the environment is still a great way to show your patriotism.
