New Segment - HFCS Free Foods
Posted on June 30, 2008 by

A lot of people mentioned having a hard time avoiding High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) in foods. I am really big on not eating HFCS, and have found tons of foods to replace the ones that list it as an ingredient.
If you have a food you love and can’t find a good HFCS-free replacement, leave a comment or e-mail me at AlliesAnswers at gmail dot com, and I’ll try to find a substitute for you. I’ll put up HFCS-free posts on Thursdays.

I want a diet soda that doesn’t have artificial sweetener in it. I guess that’s called Soda Water. Or iced tea.
Bread was and has been the biggest disappointment for me. My grocery store sells a number of excellent local breads, but they don’t match the softness of the brand name breads. I’ll keep looking, though.
Is there any good substitute for good old Heinz ketchup?
Noelle — Yes! Organic Heinz Ketchup. It rocks! And the husband has a good bread. I’ll definitely post on it.
NPW — I’ll look into it!
This is great, I can’t wait to see your posts on this as Erik and I have become much more conscious of our HFCS intake lately!
Some months back, I started listening to podcasts of Jillian Michaels’ Los Angeles radio show. She rails against HFCS all the time - so, like you guys, I’ve been more conscious of it. I’m having a hard time finding a decent tasting french dressing.
I just ran to my cupboard to check my Hunts ketchup - yep - HFCS! I never even thought to check that!
Just askin’…. Jillian pronounces it: High fr - UCK - tose.
I pronounce it: High fr - OOOOOOoooocK - tose, but I live in Minnesota.
Which is correct?
Nancy…during Passover Coke makes kosher for passover coke…no corn syrup. In fact, Passover is a great time to stock up on goodies because corn isn’t allowed during passover.
Regular Lady — I say fr - OOOOOOoooocK - tose too. I just looked it up, but actually, both are correct.
Organic Needle — thanks for the tip about kosher foods. That’s awesome.
Jill — thanks for commenting! I’ve been thinking about doing this for awhile, I’m glad other people are excited about it too.
There are plenty of ketchups out there that use sugar (or HFCS, as the case may be) replacements geared toward diabetics.
I buy Organicville brand which uses agave as a sweetener.
I’m not sure how easy it is to find such brands in mainstream groceries, though.
Allie- Only Kosher for Passover…the next level of kosher. Reg. everyday kosher is not necessarily corn free. I wrote about it during Passover.
Passover Corn
Oh great! Thanks for the link!
Hi,
Here’s a website that you might helpful. StopHFCS.com lists foods that
are HFCS-free. They welcome additions and suggestions. Also
European imported products are a good bet. Europe prohibits GMO foods
which safely eliminates HFCS. Here’s a fact: only in the U.S. is Coke
sweetened with HFCS. International Coke is sweetened with real sugar. Feel like a guinea pig?
Take care.
