We Have to Make Good Choices

I just read an article on National Geographic’s website about DDT poisoning penguins.

“What?” you say, “But DDT has been restricted since the 70’s right?”

Right.  We can’t use it anymore, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone.

DDT and other chemicals collected in glacial ice.  As the ice melts, the chemicals are released again, contaminating wildlife.

We need to be conscious of the environmental choices we’re making.  The damage done can be so much greater than we could ever fathom.

This makes me think about the apple moth spraying controversy in California right now.

We have to do what we can to get everyone on the same page.  We have to talk about this, spread the word, sign petitions, send letters, and vote to make ourselves heard about environmental issues.  We can’t just wait and hope that the people who make these decisions will make good choices.  It’s not enough.  And there’s way too much at stake.

Any time I hear about DDT, I think about this book.  I remember reading it in 2nd grade.  Does anyone else remember it?  If you have kids or you teach kids, it’s a great way to help them understand the delicate balance of the environment.

Just another example that we don’t even know the extent to which we have altered the planet. Some things take years to manifest themselves.
