Are You Serving Your Pet a Bowl of Mad Cow?
Pets for the Environment just sent around a new e-mail with a very disturbing fact about pet food.
Apparently the FDA just passed a law against using parts of animals with Mad Cow disease in any and all animal feed. Yeah. Just now. And it doesn’t go into effect until next year. Lovely.
From Pets for the Environment:
“Last Friday, the FDA made a final decision to “prohibit the use of certain cattle origin materials in the food or feed of all animals.” The certain origin materials in question are meat, tallow, brain, spinal cord, or other byproducts from cows who tested positive for Mad Cow disease. Sounds good to me, but, whoa, wasn’t that already a law!? Guess not. And this new rule won’t go into effect until April 27, 2009, so I’m keeping vigilant, and you can use my Healthy Pet Tips in the meanwhile.“

This is great that they are passing this, but this is preventative. (In my eyes not something to get worked up with yet.) There have only been a small number of animals with mad cow in our country. If there were any currently it would be all over the media because other countries would be refusing to buy our meat again. It’s not like they are currently dumping loads of mad cow meat into our pet food. Occasionally our govt does do the right thing.
