Works for Me Wednesday: A Cure for Your Dog’s Upset Tummy

My dog has an ear infection and is on antibiotics again.  Unfortunately, antibiotics upset his stomach and turn him into a stinky dog who needs to spend lots of time outside.  For this week’s Works for Me Wednesday, here’s a trick the vet taught me that has helped a lot.

Mix canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie mix, just plain pumpkin) into your dog’s food.  The extra fiber helps get him back to regular, and I believe the pumpkin also helps settle an upset stomach.  Plain yogurt or an appropriate dose of acidophilus helps too.  Start it on the same day you give the first dose of antibiotics for the best shot of avoiding tummy problems.

And of course, consult with your vet.

I was a practicing vet for 2 years before I became a SAHM, and I’d suggest the pumpkin thing all the time! And if worse comes to worse and Pup DOES develop an upset tummy, a meal of boiled chicken & rice (with no additives) helps calm things down a bit, too.

Oh, yeah! We’ve had to give my dogs canned pumpkin before, too! Any time they have tummy troubles. And they love it!

I try to avoid antibiotics at all costs but if I do have to have them or the children do we eat loads of yoghurt.

Yoghurt is a great thing - good for thrush too (except you don’t eat it then!)

Hope the doggy is better soon!

That’s great info to share! And it works!!!! I have IBS, and if I seem to scrounge anything with a preservative or artificial anything, I’ll get the big D. So Mum gives me yogurt and cottage cheese regularly, just in case! There is also a pill that Mum sometimes gives me, called Acytelator - has all the good bacteria stuff in a pill form.

Thanks for stopping by my blog!

    Woofs, Johann
