Big Green Purse Tip of the Day - Grow Your Own Tea
Posted on April 23, 2008 by

Are you a tea drinker? Big Green Purse says you should grow your own.I’m so excited about this tip! I’ve been planning out my herb garden and hoping to add herbs for tea. From Big Green Purse:
“Many herbal teas are made from plants you may already be growing in your own garden. Mint, chamomile, lemongrass, rose hips, and bee balm are among the most common. To make your own tea, add one tablespoon of fresh leaves or one teaspoon of dried leaves to a hot (not boiling) cup of water (add more leaves if you’re making a pot of tea). Steep, then add honey, lemon, cinnamon, and other natural ingredients if you want richer flavor.”
I can’t wait to get my herbs in. I drink so much herbal tea. It’ll be fun to have my very own “house blend.”

Yay! I do have some lavender and an army of other potted herbs threatening to take over my stoop… I was wondering how to actually make tea once they grow up - did I have to dry them first, etc? Thanks for the timely (and easy) tip!
i like this one a lot! i’m trying to grow some chamomile from seed again after an unsuccessful attempt last year. it would be awesome to grow and make my own tea!
Great tip! I didn’t know bee balm could be used in tea. I’m excitedly looking forward to this growing season as I’ve started several other tea herbs and can’t wait to try them out.
I love when I learn something new!! I hate that I never thought of this before but this year I will be doing this. I drink gallons of herbal tea a week. Eco and pocket friendly!!!
What a good idea! I remember collecting camomile and mint from the back yard for my mom to dry as a kid. I’ll keep this in mind when planning my little garden this year.
Aw, dang! I was hoping it would be actual tea. I guess tea requires a certain climate like they have in India or China. I don’t really drink much herbal tea, though. Oh, well.
fresh leaves? i never would have thought of that. makes me want to start a lovely herbal garden… from my window pane, i guess.
I used some fresh mint leaves found growing in my neighborhood. Man, that was some good mint tea!
let me know how your herb garden grows allie. i’ve had troubles getting any to grow from seed. they are very finicky it seems. i’ve tried basil, lavender…and…maybe that was it.
i guess not that much to make a blanket statement.
Sounds yummy and fairly easy. Herbal tea has many health benefits.
My next door neighbor hangs bunches of herbs out in the sun off of her laundry rack to dry. I just got a dehydrator, so I may give that a try for tea as well.
I think I may end up cheating and buying herb plants this year. We’ll see. . . one of my two lavender seedlings just bit it today.
I might have to try a container garden for tea!
