Big Green Purse Tip of the Day - Let Your Grass Grow!
Posted on April 25, 2008 by

I talked about this last year, but since I live in suburbia and my next door neighbor has already mowed her lawn three times (no exaggeration) this week, I wanted to mention it again. From Big Green Purse:
“Mowing your lawn at a higher level encourages grass to develop a deeper root system as well as to tolerate drought, heat, shade, disease, and pests. Recommended mowing heights are 3 inches for tall fescue, 2 1/2 inches for perennial ryegrass, and 1 inch for bent grass.”
Give your grass a head start in the spring. I always let my lawn get pretty long before the first mow. Sure, it looks like I’m just lazy, but it seems to help the roots take hold and produces greener, healthier grass without the use of chemicals. And don’t forget to make the switch to an electric or old fashioned reel mower.

I only mow my grass once a week, sometimes longer. Also, I share a lawnmower with my parents.
I must be way ahead of the curve then. The grass at my house was nearly knee high before the first it was mowed this spring! I’m glad I was doing something good for it in letting it get like that.
i think we pretty much stick to those mowing heights (3 inches isn’t very much!) but we can’t let our grass get too tall, because the reel mower can’t handle it as well then. even so i think once a week is probably the most often we ever mow.
i heard so many noisy gas mowers in my neighborhood this week!
we don’t really even have a lawn at our apartment. and unfortunately, we don’t really have a say in it either, as my landlady has a landscaper boyfriend who takes care of it.
for my house, my farm, someday, we won’t even have a lawn, we’ll have veggies EVERYWHERE! ha!
I’m so ready to plant the entire backyard into a garden!! I hate mowing the lawn…
i love long grass full of wildflowers… mowing is such a dumb obsession. we had a neighbor on my street (growing up) who used to mow every day then pound his lawn with this big meat tenderizer looking thing…
I’m with Nicole on this one! Mine definitely doesn’t get mowed much, and one of my neighbors lets theirs get knee-high before they mow it. Although I think it might have more to do with laziness on their part than trying to let the grass get healthier and use less gas…
We keep our lawn around 2 1/2 inches. We have been planting clover seed to cover our lawn. It is green grows short and if we skip a mowing or two we end up with cute little flowers.
