Green Chic Tip of the Day - Axe the Bleach

Today’s tip from Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style is all about laundry.

Using bleach on your whites is not the eco-friendly way to go.

“Bleach is caustic and can be fatal if swallowed. It can also react with other chemicals to produce dioxins. Try hydrogen peroxide to get your whites whiter and all that.”

According to DIY, here’s how you do it:

“3 percent hydrogen peroxide is super for removing bloodstains, especially if they are fairly fresh. It also is a wonderful bleaching agent for stubborn stains on white clothes. Combine 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide and 1 teaspoon ammonia for an unbeatable stain-removal combination. Make sure to use 3 percent and not the kind you use to bleach your hair!”

Thanks to Carrie at Sourcebooks, I now have three copies of Green Chic to give away. Find out how to enter and post your comments after the jump.

I enjoyed reading my copy of Green Chic, and in the spirit of being eco-friendly, I’d like to pass it (and two additional copies from Sourcebooks!) on for someone else to read. For the rest of the week, I’m going to make the Tip of the Day a tip from Green Chic.

Sign in with a valid e-mail address to comment on the Green Chic Tip of the Day posts from Tuesday, March 18th through Friday, March 21st. For each comment, you’ll get an entry (one per day, please). The giveaway will close on Sunday, March 23, at noon (Eastern), and I’ll draw three names out of a hat to determine the winners. The winners will be announced on Monday, March 24th. Comments that appear to be spam will not be counted.

Anyone can enter, so don’t hesitate to leave a comment.

Good luck!

I love my hydrogen peroxide! If you really want to get things white, do a soak with it in your machine for a while. It does a fab job :)

I just decided long ago that my whites aren’t getting any whiter. A little soap and some cold water is all my clothes are getting.

I was concerned about using bleach with my whites, but I use so little (a cap full) that I don’t think it can be that harmful…and how is hydrogen peroxide and ammonia better and any less harmful than bleach?

    Google search coming up!

I got an e-mail from Sourcebooks asking if I might be interested in reading Green Chic and possibly reviewing it on the site. I said heck yeah. Carrie sent me a copy, and then after I decided to do the contest and make a week long thing out of it, she said she’d send two more copies to give away.

I’m excited about it! It’s fun to have something to give away. Sourcebooks seems like a neat publisher, and I love that this book is printed on post-consumer waste, and that Christie Matheson is giving away such a huge chunk of her profits to environmental causes. It seemed like a nice thing to promote.

And just to clarify (because I always wonder about these things), all I’m getting out of this is the copies to give away. I don’t do paid reviews, and if I hadn’t liked the book, I wouldn’t have written about it at all.
