Green Chic Tip of the Day - Do. Not. Smoke. Ever.
Posted on March 21, 2008 by

According to Green Chic: Saving the Earth in Style, 25 million pounds of pesticides are used on tobacco plants every year. And that’s not the only environmental issue with smoking:
“The smoke from cigarettes is ten times more polluting than exhaust from diesel fuel. Worldwide, smoking emits more than 5.5 billion pounds of CO2 and more than 11 billion pounds of methane annually. Considering that methane is twenty-three times more potent as a greenhouse gas than CO2, that’s the equivalent of about 235 pounds of CO2 per smoker per year. Then there’s all the packaging, and the fact that so many smokers use the sidewalk as an ashtray.”
So if you’re a smoker, and health reasons alone aren’t enough to get you quit, maybe the carbon cost will. If you’ve been known to bum a cigarette off a friend while you’re at a party, don’t.

I enjoyed reading my copy of Green Chic, and in the spirit of being eco-friendly, I’d like to pass it (and two additional copies from Sourcebooks!) on for someone else to read. For the rest of the week, I’m going to make the Tip of the Day a tip from Green Chic.
Sign in with a valid e-mail address to comment on the Green Chic Tip of the Day posts from Tuesday, March 18th through Friday, March 21st. For each comment, you’ll get an entry (one per day, please). The giveaway will close on Sunday, March 23, at noon (Eastern), and I’ll draw three names out of a hat to determine the winners. The winners will be announced on Monday, March 24th. Yucky! Plus everyone has breathing problems nowadays!! So many kids have bad asthma.
Hey just stopping by to get my dose of green info. Always good stuff here! I am trying to compile a list of stuff I can do to reduce my carbon emissions. MTV had a commercial about it, and got me interested. I have been to http://www.earthlab.com and they have a ton of tips but I was mostly impressed by their page where they have their users send in tips: http://www.earthlab.com/life/tips.aspx Does anyone else know of other data bases that I can find these types of small things that lower my emissions? EPA or WWF maybe?
Thanks for all your info and drop me a link if you guys see anything worth my time.
I think this was your most definitive answer ever. I love it.
My boyfriend has been talking about quitting lately (and I’ve been doing my best to talk him into it!), and the link you provided is a great resource!
It took me five years to quit smoking. I’m glad I did for all the usual reasons but there are days when all I want is a cigarette. On those days I second hand smoke. That is, I stand next to someone who’s smoking. Relieves my craving.
Still I consider myself smoke free. 7 years and counting! In all that time, I’ve fallen off the wagon once: 9/11. I bought a pack, smoked it, but didn’t buy another. I didn’t get down on myself because it was a pretty traumatic time in the nation and the world.
Wow! Good for you, Michelle! That’s awesome.
Danielle, glad the link was helpful!
Noelle, it was pretty definitive, huh?
Sally, the increase in bad asthma in kids is so sad. Having asthma totally interferes with being a kid.
I don’t get it. There isn’t a single reason TO smoke. I just don’t get it.
