Tip of the Day - Celebrate Buy Nothing Day

Today is all about giving thanks and eating good food with friends and family. Or, if you’re my family, Saturday will be that day, because someone (I’m not saying me, but I’m not saying it wasn’t me either) forgot to defrost the main event. Um. . . so anyway, as I was saying, today is all about giving thanks, but for some people, tomorrow is the holiday they wait all year for — Black Friday. The crazy day where stores open at 4AM with “door buster” sales and “amazing” deals on all sorts of things we could admit we don’t really need if we take a minute from the consumer frenzy to think about it.

Tomorrow, instead of waiting in line before the sun comes up, stay in bed (if you don’t have to work). Eat a leisurely breakfast. Spend more time with your family. Read a book. Read some blogs. Knit. Craft. Write a letter. Go for a hike. Walk the dog. Bake some cookies. Play a board game. But what ever you do, don’t buy anything.

Celebrate Buy Nothing Day.

AdBusters, the organization behind Buy Nothing Day urges you to “participate by not participating.” It’s a 24 hour moratorium on spending as a response to hyper-consumerism.

Not content to just stay home and buy nothing? Get out and protest creatively. Walk the malls like a zombie or get some friends together and push empty shopping carts around. But whatever you do, don’t buy anything.

Limiting your consumption is one of the best ways to be eco-friendly.

I am totally participating in buy nothing day. Of course, I have some of the not-so-altruistic reasons of 1) not being able to drive and 2) having to be at work at 8:00, but there’s also that 3) I can’t stand the idea of competitive shopping. So icky. So yeah, credit card will be firmly in wallet until December 24th or so when I realize I should get SOME presents…

Look at you, being an activist! :) See, if you have to work the day after Thanksgiving, I think it probably helps to think of it as an eco-friendly, anti-hyperconsumist act. You’re not just working. You’re being defiant.

    I bought nothing - I went nowhere.

    It was awesome.

That is awesome! I really enjoy Buy Nothing Day. It’s good to have a break from all the holiday madness.
