Tip of the Day - Get an Eco-Friendly Toilet Seat

Yesterday, I had to run to Home Depot to get a new toilet seat.  The wood seat we had split and was getting a little fresh when used.  By yesterday, it didn’t even qualify as a toilet seat anymore.  It was a bunch of boards on top of the toilet.  I thought about gluing it, but then I thought about how embarrassing it would be to have the paramedics come and remove the seat from my posterior if the glue didn’t dry all the way.  Plus, the seat was old anyway.

Since Home Depot is working on their Eco-Options program, I was hoping to find a sustainable seat.  No such luck.

Had my toilet seat purchasing expedition not been so urgent, I would have ordered an eco-friendly one online.

The wonderful thing about bamboo is that in addition to being a rapidly renewable resource, it’s also naturally antibacterial.   Of course, you shouldn’t swap out a perfectly good seat for a bamboo one, but if you’re in the market, bamboo is a great option.

I wish I’d been able to find a bamboo seat.  Instead, I opted for another wood one.  I figure since it’s simply varnished and not coated with plastics or other chemicals, it’s probably a little bit better.  Hopefully, this one will stay in once piece.

  1. I had a roommate in college that broke the toilet seat once. He denied it, but it had to have been him. He fit the profile. I hated that guy.

  2. Hahaha! That’s pretty funny. Ours was a simple wear and tear/poor quality to begin with issue. I don’t think we can throw blame on this one.

  3. It’s too bad you didn’t purchase one of the wood seats at Home Depot. I believe those (Bemis brand -?) are actually eco-firendly. If you read the box it mentions ‘rediscovered wood’ and I believe they use water based paints.

Soak Up Stains With Salt

I’ve been a little lax about scrubbing the kitchen sink lately. It’s old white porcelain and soaks up stains like nobody’s business. If I keep up with it, a gentle all purpose cleaner is enough to get the stains out, but when I let it go, it’s usually time to bring out the big guns.
