Giving gifts that will be used up is a great way to go if you make a little effort to chose the right consumables.

Bake cookies, make fudge or chocolate covered pretzels and put them in a reusable jar or tin.  Try your hand at making spiced nuts.  Or check out Dianne’s Dishes this week for her her homemade jar gift recipes.

Don’t want to spend time in the kitchen?  What about a basket of organic fair trade chocolates, or a fancy mug made by a local potter paired with a selection of fair trade teas and coffees? What about a bottle of organic wine and some local organic cheeses? Or check out the awesome gift baskets at Equal Exchange.

The goodies will be appreciated, and most likely consumed before New Years, leaving behind very little waste.

Soak Up Stains With Salt

I’ve been a little lax about scrubbing the kitchen sink lately. It’s old white porcelain and soaks up stains like nobody’s business. If I keep up with it, a gentle all purpose cleaner is enough to get the stains out, but when I let it go, it’s usually time to bring out the big guns.
