Tip of the Day - Go For a Walk After Dinner

This goes along with Monday’s tip about eating less.

Most of our dinners have left me feeling full, but last night I felt like a bottomless pit.  I was going to make myself some PB on toast, or start with the random snacking, but Argo was nagging me to take him on our evening walk.

We walked briskly around the block and up and down the side streets, and by the time we got back, I realized I was full.

Eating fat triggers something in your body that tells you you’re full (I remember this from nutrition class in school), but when you eat low fat meals, it takes your body longer to realize it’s had enough.  Work with the time delay, and get yourself out of the house and away from the fridge while you’re waiting for that full feeling to set in.

Here are a few more tricks for eating less.  And here are some hints on healthy living from the FDA.

This is a great tip! I know that I tend to eat A LOT more if I’m just sitting around.

I just joined Weight Watchers today to help me lose 20 lbs, and this is definitely something they would suggest. There are all kinds of ways to sorta “trick” your mind into not overeating.

Oh yes, definitely. I often go out for my run at about 8pm (an hour or so after eating) and it a) gives me energy to do some work in the evening b)stops me getting mid-evening snacking habits c)means I drop off to sleep really quickly when I do go to bed. And it’s lovely to go out for a stroll or jog in the evening - it was really common to do that where I used to live, people went out every evening for a stroll along the promenade by the sea and you’d bump into neighbours and things. It seems less popular here.

plus, i read that it takes the stomach 20 minutes to realize it is full. i think about that when i look at the clock after eating and only 15 minutes have passed. most people could eat TWO whole meals in 20 minutes. so distancing yourself from food supplies is a good idea.

also though, i too have switched to a more…low fat diet - eating more veggies and fruit with concentrated and intentional fats thrown in. i definitely feel more hungry, regardless of how long I wait! It may not just be that you need to wait, you might just really be hungry :) Eating this lighter, rabbit food confuses my stomach who is used to the heavy, carb leaden snacks and sides. i still eat them, i am NOT anti carbs in any way, but i’m just trying to eat more intentionally.
