Tip of the Day - Go Veg One Day A Week

According to New Scientist,

A kilogram of beef is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions and other pollution than driving for 3 hours while leaving all the lights on back home.

You might not be ready to switch to a vegetarian diet, but spending one day a week eating animal-free foods is easy.

Start your day with an organic soy milk and frozen fruit smoothie, or a big bowl of oatmeal with fruit and nuts.

For lunch, try vegetarian chili or lentil soup, and a salad with chick peas, sunflower seeds and fresh veggies.

Dinner can be a simple as a Sloppy Joe made with TVP (Textured Vegetable Protein).

I read somewhere that if you don’t like a certain food, eating a little of it every day for seven days will help you retrain your taste buds, and you’ll start to like it.  So, if you don’t think you like tofu, soy milk, or TVP, give it another chance and try to get used to it.  It’ll get better.

I really wish someone would come up with a better name than Textured Vegetable Protein. No matter how well you cook it, most stalwart meat eaters won’t touch something so unappetizing sounding. It’s a shame, because in a well-made chili, it blends really well. Tofu has the same problem. It’s stigma is worse than its bite.

If it is what I think it is, here they call it granulated soy. I don’t like the one that comes in big chunks - not because of the taste, but because it feels like soggy bread once it’s cook, but the kind that ends up looking like mince after it’s rehydrated is quite nice and makes quite a good lasagne bolognese.

My husband and I were JUST talking about the whole TVP naming thing. It really needs an image makeover.

Our local natural foods store sells TVP in little strips in the bulk section. I love them cooked up in some hot sauce as a substitute for wings, but they do take getting used to. I agree that the smaller pieces are easy to adjust too, and maybe if they had a different name it would be a little easier to sneak them past picky eaters.
