Any plans for Memorial Day weekend? For lots of families, it’s time to pull the grill out of the garage and have a barbecue. Here are some eco-friendly tips and tricks for enjoying the long weekend.

To grill or not to grill, that is the question. Check out Grist’s green grilling guide or Sundance’s article on green grilling, for information on the greenest way to grill, and a great barbecue sauce recipe.

And, of course, what you grill is as important as how you grill. Hit your local farm store or farmer’s market to pick up some veggies, and check out some vegetarian grilling recipes over at Allrecipes.

Pass on disposable plates, cups and utensils in favor of reusables. Decorate with plants instead of streamers and banners. And encourage your guests to bike over or drive responsibly.

Also, don’t forget what this holiday is about. Let’s honor not just the people we’ve lost, but the people who are still fighting. Consider sending messages of support or a care package to our troops overseas.

Here in Colorado Springs they have a festival called Territory Days. It’s only a couple mile bike ride and it’s easier then trying to park so we are going to head over there tomorrow or Sunday depending on the weather. There is lots of free entertainment in addition to the vendor booths so we should be able to window shop while eating the snacks we are bringing from home most of the day.

When future generations judge those who came before them on environmental issues, they may conclude “they didn’t know”: let us not go down in history as the generations who knew, but didn’t care.
