Tip of the Day - Make Your Own Car Wax

Rachel e-mailed me yesterday to ask if I’d ever done a post on a greener way to wash your car.

I directed her to the post on washing your car on the lawn, but then I started to think about car wax. I haven’t waxed a car in a very long time, but that smell is ingrained my mind, and I’m sure car wax is filled with things that aren’t eco-friendly.

I did a little research and found a recipe for car wax you can make at home with natural ingredients. It’s easy to make and I can’t wait to try it! Check it out, along with other care care recipes, here.

Here in the Bay Area, we worry a lot about what drains into the bay, and what comes off your car when you wash it is not good. Washing your car in your driveway will mean oil, exhaust residue, gasoline, and other grime entering the water. In my city, those holding fundraising car washes can borrow a storm drain protection kit. If you are washing your car at home, you’re encouraged to wash it on the grass or on gravel, away from storm drains. You can also go to a professional car wash that has a system for draining their water and keeping it away from the bay. I believe they are required to do this, but it’s probably best to ask.

Nice! thanks for sharing, that smell is exactly why I haven’t waxed my car EVER, I can’t wait to try that recipe too.

I don’t think I’ve ever waxed one of my cars (hell, I’m terrible about washing them half the time), but the DIY aspect of this intrigues me.

I waxed my car last fall, and it lasted all through the winter. I have enough left over for at least 3 more waxes. However, I didn’t think to make my own…

Yeah I’ve heard because of the drainage and water filtering and treatments required for car washes it is actually better to go there. If you use one that is just a drive in use it yourself stall then you can still control what chemicals are used to wash it.

I’m to lazy to wax but that’s a great idea.
