Tip of the Day - Start Your Seeds

chertom_full.jpg

Yesterday, I stocked up on seeds at our natural foods store.  I’m so excited!

I’m going to grow Hale’s Best Melons, King of the North Peppers, Peace Vine Cherry Tomatoes, Lemon Cucumbers, Greek Oregano, and Common Sage from seed.  The seeds I bought are from High Mowing Seeds, and are USDA Organic.  High Mowing Seeds is a family owned company in Vermont and are opposed to GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms).  Their seeds come from heirloom, open-pollinated, and hybrid sources, and thrive in the short Vermont growing season (great news if you live somewhere cold like me).

I also picked up some organic potting soil and can’t wait to get my hands dirty this weekend.

Read the seed packets and know your zone, so you know when to start your seedlings. .  My first year planting, I got overly excited and tried to start everything indoors immediately.  By the time they were ready to plant outside, I had some plants that were way too big for their little starter pots and starting to wilt, some that were too small and should have been started earlier, and some that died in the transplant process because they should have been planted directly in the ground (I also had some seedlings that thrived, so it wasn’t a total bust).

Happy gardening!

I love this time of year! It’s always exciting when you see the first few seedlings pop up. I just got a whole bunch of seeds recently too, and am starting to plan out my first square foot garden.

Mmm… just looking at the picture makes me want to have a salad in the warm summer sun.

I’m glad someone else has discovered the wonderful-ness that is High Mowing Seeds. Happy planting to you!

In good news, I may have a garden plot after all. There’s some raised bed possibilities in a nearby garden that others have thrown their hands up at. We’ll see if it works out that I get it!
